Too Big for your Britches?

IMG_1238Someone asked, “How does your ego get in your way?” I wanted to say “What ego?”

After thinking about it, maybe I do have a big ego after all, because anytime we get our feelings hurt, isn’t that a kind of  sign that our big ego is saying “How dare you hurt ME?”

Romans 12:3 Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. I’m just guessing here, but don’t you think a swollen ego is why we are so unwilling to receive correction, of any kind? Proverbs 19:20-21 Take good counsel and accept correction—that’s the way to live wisely and well. We humans keep brainstorming options and plans, but God’s purpose prevails. Sometimes it’s good to just stop and take stock of what’s going on inside of you, an inventory of thoughts, then we might say, like the Psalmist King: Psalm 129:34 Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life.

Have you ever thought your house was in pretty good shape, then someone rings your doorbell and you look around and through the eyes of your company you can see a lot of things that should have been taken care of; or you think you have been doing good with your diet and exercise program, then you have to meet someone you know is going to give you the “once over” and you realize how much more you need to do? If we look at ourselves, our life, through our own, prejudiced, eyes, we won’t look so terrible, but if you look at the way you must look to God there might be some things you want to “tweak”, an attitude, an action, or an omission of things you know you should be doing.

James 1:22-24 Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. So look at yourself using the Word as your mirror.

There have been times when I felt like the Christian equivalent of Superman, times when I thought I had everything in my life under control, then something would happen that made me realize that I have yet again been floored by some form of Kryptonite! There I am, prone, on the floor, turning green and waiting for someone to come along and take the Kryptonite off my chest so I can breathe again! Only thing is, the devil, in the form of Lex Luthor, was not the one that placed it there, I did it to myself!

James 1:13-18 Don’t let anyone under pressure to give in to evil say,” God is trying to trip me up.” God is impervious to evil, and puts evil in no one’s way. The temptation to give in to evil comes from us and only us. We have no one to blame but the leering, seducing flare-up of our own lust. Lust gets pregnant, and has a baby: sin! Sin grows up to adulthood, and becomes a real killer. Don’t be discouraged; you’re still a child of the King, and Philippians 4:13 says I can do all things, through Christ, which strengthens me.

A beautiful song, “Something Beautiful” written by the Gaithers says,” If there ever were dreams that were lofty and noble, they are our dreams from the start, and the hopes for life’s best are the hopes that we harbor, down deep in our heart. Then your dreams turn to ashes and the castles all crumble, your fortune turns to loss, well rap it all in the rags of your life and lay it at the cross. Let Christ make something beautiful, out of your life!”
