Having just talked with a lady who is facing the imminent death of her brother within a few hours, I started thinking about our Mortality, something I have thought of a lot in the past twelve months. I watched a little of a program about XTreme sports and the things they do is enough to frighten me sitting right here in my own house! Then there are the bull riders, cage fighters, and worst of all the Jack Ass crew and the group of motorcycle riders that I have seen on 1-20, going through Atlanta on the back wheel of their motorcycle at high rates of speed. There is one other thing that could be on this list, it would be those of us who take our life in our hands mixing all the relatives on Holidays!
The definition of “mortality” is ‘the condition of being mortal or susceptible to death, the opposite of immortality.’ When you spend a few days in a hospital, as we did with my dad last year when we watched him go into eternity, you get an up close and personal look at people facing their own mortality, and immortality of the soul, not by playing dangerous games but because their own bodies have become the enemy they are fighting for control of their life. When a doctor makes you feel that your loved one is be facing death on a schedule, that’s when the flesh becomes frightened. There are a few scriptures to go to for comfort: 1 Corinthians 15:51-57 But let me tell you something wonderful, a mystery I’ll probably never fully understand. We’re not all going to die—but we are all going to be changed. You hear a blast to end all blasts from a trumpet, and in the time that you look up and blink your eyes—it’s over. On signal from that trumpet from heaven, the dead will be up and out of their graves, beyond the reach of death, never to die again. At the same moment and in the same way, we’ll all be changed. In the resurrection scheme of things, this has to happen: everything perishable taken off the shelves and replaced by the imperishable, this mortal replaced by the immortal. Then the saying will come true: Death swallowed by triumphant Life! Who got the last word, oh, Death? Oh, Death, who’s afraid of you now? It was sin that made death so frightening and law-code guilt that gave sin its leverage, its destructive power. But now in a single victorious stroke of Life, all three—sin, guilt, death—are gone, the gift of our Master, Jesus Christ. Thank God!
1 Timothy 1:9-10 We can only keep on going, after all, by the power of God, who first saved us and then called us to this holy work. We had nothing to do with it. It was all his idea, a gift prepared for us in Jesus long before we knew anything about it. But we know it now. Since the appearance of our Savior, nothing could be plainer: death defeated, life vindicated in a steady blaze of light, all through the work of Jesus.
I want my soul to be ready to die, but we shouldn’t dwell too much on that because God put us here to LIVE! Philippians 1:21-26 I’m Christ’s messenger; dead, I’m his bounty. Life versus even more life! I can’t lose. As long as I’m alive in this body, there is good work for me to do. If I had to choose right now, I hardly know which I’d choose. Hard choice! The desire to break camp here and be with Christ is powerful. Some days I can think of nothing better. But most days, because of what you are going through, I am sure that it’s better for me to stick it out here. We have been given a work to do, first is to love God with our heart, soul and mind, and our neighbor as our self. We shall be changed; we will put off our mortal body become immortal! We have an immortal soul that will live throughout all eternity, we need to make sure that we can stand before God and tell Him that we have done out best to run the race set before us with courage, perseverance and faithfulness to His heavenly cause.
Dottie Rambo penned these words: When the skies shall unfold preparing His entrance, the stars will applaud Him in thunders of praise, the sweet light in His eyes shall enhance those awaiting and we shall behold Him, then face to face!
Can you say, It Is Well? Be blessed
