What are you worried about?

Let me ask you a question, did you stay awake all night long praying that the sun would rise this morning, or were you afraid to lay down and go to sleep because you were afraid your digestive system would quit working or your heart would forget to beat in your chest so that your blood would circulate, have you made a conscious effort today to make sure your eyes batted in order to keep your eyes moist? Did you answer yes to any of those questions? You probably said, “That girl has lost her mind, what is she even talking about?”

I just became aware while I was quietly meditating this morning of all those things which we simply take for granted. I was not afraid when I made my little pancake for breakfast that it would not digest because the soy powder protein it was made with would somehow rebel in my stomach. While I was waiting I became aware that my bladder was full and needed to be relieved yet I didn’t wonder how the water was made in my body or how my kidneys filtered it.

Are you tired of this dialog yet? Simply trying to make the point that the things we take for granted every day are the very things that our lives depend upon in order to continue to live.

The Bible says in Genesis 1:1-5 First this: God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don’t see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, and an inky blackness. God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss. God spoke: “Light!” And light appeared. God saw that light was good and separated light from dark. God named the light Day and he named the dark Night. It was evening; it was morning—Day One.

If you continue to read the chapter you see God creating all the vegetation, animals and finally He made a man in His own image. From the side of the man He took a rib and created a companion for the man, a woman. He set life into motion with the breath of His own nostrils and then He walked with them every evening and discussed things with them. They were His creation and He loved them the way you love your baby from the moment, for a mom, that you first feel them kicking from the inside of your belly and for a dad I think it was the moment my children’s dad saw them and had them placed in his arms. It is amazing to me the way a cat immediately knows how to be a mother to four precious kittens without instructions from a nurse or a manual on “How to care for your kittens”. That’s nature as it was intended from the beginning, things being carried on in a natural way every day on this earth.

God still does His part in that the sun rises every morning without ever burning out and the moon goes through a cycle each month from being full all the way down to the silver sliver called the “new moon” and the tides of the sea are controlled within these cycles. The stars were placed in the sky and were used for centuries by men travelling on land and on the sea and if you don’t believe they really do play a role in our everyday life then you don’t realize just how big is our God.

Now let me ask you something else… why is it that you worry that you are not going to be healed, that your financial needs are not gong to be met, that the things you need will not come? Do you remember that the Children of Israel were in the desert for forty years and that God supplied them with food and water? That the shoes on their feet didn’t wear out? How many of you reading this have shoes that are forty-plus years old that you can still wear? God provided a cloud by day for natural air conditioning and a pillar of fire by night so that they would be warmed. When they were at the Red Sea on one side and had soldiers chasing them trying to kill them from the other God opened the sea for them to walk across on dry ground and then drowned their enemies behind them! Let me ask you again, what are you worried about?

Philippians 4:11-14 Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.

Matthew 6: 30-33 “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

Now let me ask you one more time: What are you worried about?

  1. Harolene, I read a threatening letter prior to walking into work. I knew to grab my scriptures to read up on peace because I knew I needed some. One of the verses was a particular chapter that calmed me down. 2 Thessalonian 3…Where He Leads I will follow. No worries here. I trust God to work this out and end it favorably for me.
