There is a balm in Gilead

We have had a very stressful day, my dad really did come close to just going to heaven. Around 4PM I turned on some special music, first I played “He Touched Me”, he sat with eyes closed but tears began to roll over his brown cheeks, then I started his favorite song, “I’ve Just Seen Jesus” that was when he finally opened his eyes and began to talk to Jesus out loud, and then I put on an old recording of “No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus” and he was the one singing, I was on the organ and my mother on piano, that was when he made the turn! The balm of Gilead swept over his soul and he begin to revive. There is an old hymn he used to sing not only in church, but as he prayed. I could hear him weep for the people in his congregation and sing it, I didn’t understand as a little girl, but having looked it up in the scriptures, I see that Jeremiah penned the words in 8:22 Are there no healing ointments (balm) in Gilead? Isn’t there a doctor in the house? So why can’t something be done to heal and save my dear, dear people? He sung the words: There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole; There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin sick soul.  I thought of that today upon learning that an old friend of the family had taken their own life. What is the solution for our world, country, home, me? David asked the question and gave the answer in Psalm 121:1-3 I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. He won’t let you stumble; your Guardian God won’t fall asleep. Not on your life! Israel’s Guardian will never doze or sleep. We live in a time when the majority of the commercials you see on television are about painkillers and antidepressants. Funny thing about the latter is it comes with a disclaimer: “If you get feelings of suicide, be sure to tell your doctor!” WHAT? You are taking something to make you feel less depressed and then you want to kill yourself? Is that the solution or the problem? Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. That makes me feel secure! My great God will protect and strengthen me! When I was a little girl I always felt safe if my daddy was with me, he was bigger and stronger than anyone. He is 95 now, is he still strong? Not so much, not physically anyway, but his spirit is strong. He has applied that Balm in Gilead to his soul on a daily basis, and it has worked for him. He is not depressed, nor forgetful, and if you want a prayer answered, I always say “Let’s call out the big guns” then ask him to pray. My suggestion for all us who need relief for pain, whether it is physical or mental, is to call on that Healer of Broken Hearts, Jesus. Isaiah 43: 18 “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? So much of the time we grieve about things that have happened that we no longer have control over, yet they are ever present in our mind; that is like carrying a weight around your neck, your can’t lift your head, and your eyes cannot look up. Here is the Balm I use that always helps me! Jeremiah 32:27 “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me? Jeremiah 33:3 ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ If I told you about a great skin cream that I used, or a wrinkle remover that really worked, wouldn’t you want to try it? I am offering you Balm, God’s Word! Give it a try, be blessed!

  2. This is very rich…….I’m sorry about your friend. Sometimes we never truly know the inside pain someone is dealing with.
in my early Christian steps, The Balm Of Giliad always stayed with me as something to believe in. My sister Dolly used to pray for it in many personal prayers for me.
God nless you and you Dad…….I love you.
