12:06 AM Friday morning, barely! I had dreaded to see this day come, the first of the holidays we would celebrate without my dad sitting at the head of the table. We had special silver for him, which lay alone in the drawer, and when we took hands and had our prayer it was my brother-in-law that said it. I had only one extra plate to fix instead of two and the one I did fix was barely touched except for the bites she was trying to sneak to the dog hiding in wait for crumbs under the table!
We ate and told stories that had us laughing so hard my stomach was aching, then my sister and daughter put on a “mini drama” by singing a duet from “I’ll be home for Christmas”… we applauded and then listened to a song a good friend had sent to me via text, isn’t technology wonderful? Everyone had their phones in hand and was trying to get on my Wi-Fi and we were trying to pass that email around so all could enjoy the song on their own, thanks Phil!
There is a song we used to sing from a Gaither production, “Alleluia” I believe, that says “I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God, I’ve been washed in the fountain cleansed by His blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, for I’m part of the family, the family of God.” It is a terrible thing when siblings get into disagreements and make a rip, a tear, a rift in the family, because everyone in the family loves the both of you and to try and be civil to all concerned while trying to make peace can wear on your nerves until they are frayed beyond nerve medicine! If my children have a problem it tears me out of the frame! I ask God to give me the wisdom to be the best and most wise mom that can solve these kinds of problems. So if we are made in the image of God the Father and we are like Him don’t you think it makes Him very sad when He sees children in His family having difficulties and arguments among themselves that it grieves His heart?
I asked the question one day this week “When there is an argument, are you the one that starts it, or the one that stops it?” Matthew 5:9 “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of compete or fight. That’s when you discover who you really are, and your place in God’s family.” In other words, “Blessed are the peacemakers!” That is one reason to “keep the peace”, the other is found in the Proverbs and was beaten into my head when I was a little girl, 6:16-19 “Here are six things that God hates and one more He loathes with a passion: eyes that are arrogant, a tongue that lies, hands that murder the innocent, a heart that hatches evil plots, feet that race down a wicked track a mouth that lies under oath, a trouble maker in the family.”
Did you notice that seventh thing, the one the verse says God loathes? It was “a trouble maker in the family”! To what family is He referring? Our own personal families and the church family as we are all His children and especially when you are claiming to be part of a Christian endeavor to win souls and can’t even agree to disagree with your brother or sister in Christ!
The things we do on this earth to make money and give ourselves comforts are OK, not wrong, but not earning us one thing toward our eternal home. When the young man asked Jesus what he could do to go to heaven, Jesus told him “love your neighbor as good as you do yourself!” Luke 10:27 You wouldn’t tell people bad things about or question your own integrity would you? Then why do you try to create doubt in someone about your “neighbor”?
I just wish that everyone in the whole family of God could sit down at a great big table and have a good time, wait a minute I think God already has that planned, it’s called the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb!”
Just my thoughts at the end of a special day!
