The Man in the Mirror

rainbow-blue-sky-cloudsI read several status updates today that talked about the new year being “365 blank pages to be filled” and as I have written for the past two days a time to “shed your skin and start again”, but in reality are we really going to now do the things we have been waiting until 1-1-14 to do or are you waiting for someone else to do it for you?

My dad always taught us that “the man in the mirror” gave you more trouble than anyone else and that when it happened to him he would “take himself by the nap of the neck and drag himself in front of the mirror to look himself in the eye and address his problem!” Michael Jackson wrote a song that talked about the Man in the Mirror asking him to make a change. The “man in the mirror” is the only person in your life that you have complete control over.

There is a prayer, I’m sure you have heard it: ” God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

I am remembering an Easter that a well-meaning lady in the church decided to make my Easter dress this was totally unsolicited, I know her heart was in the right place but I was sixteen and like any girl my age I wanted to be in fashion and look a little sophisticated. If you know anything about me you know that my “signature” color is black, but I will go for a bright red or a cobalt blue, the little number she made was pastel pink with a high round “Peter Pan” collar, elbow length sleeves, a full skirt and a belt with a mother-of-pearl belt buckle, are you laughing yet? I was more than embarrassed I was humiliated. All I wanted was for that day to be over.

Everything that happens to us is like a recipe for our life that makes us who we are, and effects how we deal with situations and people. We have all done things that, thinking back on it, makes us cringe, so the best way to start with the man in the mirror is to offer him a full pardon for all past mistakes. How do you think Moses dealt with his rage and the murder he committed, Abraham’s lie about his wife being his sister (a half truth, no pun intended) or Jacob with the deception of his father and stealing his brother’s birthright? Isaiah 43:18 “Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?”

You can’t drive down the road while only looking in your rear view mirror; you’ll either end up in a head-on collision or the ditch! Philippians 3:12-14 “I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.”

Since yesterday is gone and tomorrow never comes, all we have is today, so we have to live for today and the only way to make the most of it is to give yourself a clean slate and start over! Lamentations 3:22-24 “God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created new every morning. How great your faithfulness! I’m sticking with God (I say it over and over). He’s all I’ve got left.”

If God is willing to forgive you everyday and give you a fresh start, why don’t you try being nice to the man in the mirror and give him a break? I don’t think you can truly love others until you can love yourself, just the way God made you, flaws and all! An old hymn says, “Have Thine on way Lord, Thou are the potter, I am the clay; Mold me and make me after Your will, while I am waiting yielded and still.” When you say it, mean it because sometimes getting molded into a new product can put a hurt on you, and I pray you never have to wear a pastel pink dress, against your will! Make 2014 the best year of your life!

  1. I see every day that I am given a chance to live my best life. That’s the way I see it. I’m not a resolutions person. I think that using each day to love more, give more, forgive and live life on purpose is all I need. No, not everyday will be my best day but at least I can find the good in each day. I think often times people wait for the New Year, wait to lose weight, wait to join the gym, wait to be a better person, wait to make that move because we wait for the “perfect time.” Truth is there is no perfect time, there is now.
