It’s Ash Wednesday!

541038_10150740390737355_70630972354_9536214_1726706235_nCan you believe it? It still gets dark early and it is chilly out, but we have the promise of spring! I am very happy that this weekend we will start daylight-savings time, which makes our days, seem a little longer.

Wednesday, 3/05 is Ash Wednesday and begins the Lenten season. I thought that a good way to observe it would be to follow Jesus as He walks along the dusty roads, listen in and watch with His disciples as He ministers to the people. Matthew chapters 7-9 list several major miracles of Jesus.

I was trying to choose one to discuss here and found that each of them has one important common thread and that is great faith! In Matthew 8 we read of the Centurion who came to Jesus and told Him that his servant was at home, paralyzed and in terrible suffering. Vs 7 Jesus said to him, “I will go and heal him.” The centurion replied,” Lord I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go’, and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant,’ Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard this, He was astonished and said to those following Him,” I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.”  8:23 Jesus got into a boat with His disciples, He was going to take a rest while they crossed to the other side Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.  The centurion believed Jesus could do the miracle so strongly that he didn’t even need Him to go to his house, just speak the Word!

The disciples were with Him every day, SAW Him do all the miracles, starting with turning water into the best wine of the day at a wedding, healing lame, raising dead, opening deaf ears, delivering people from demons, and yet, there they were on the boat WITH Him and, they were afraid they were going to drown, now I have a problem with that!

Of course it happens today also, we get answers to our prayers and when a crisis, large or small, occurs, we panic, “HELP! I don’t know WHAT I am going to do!” During the rest of this forty day period why don’t you read about all His wonderful works and try to see yourself as the Centurion, with so much faith that you don’t have to have hands layed on you or be anointed with oil or even be at church, we can say “God, I need (insert your need, physical, financial, mental) and Jesus died on the cross so that I could approach Your throne boldly, so I am asking you in the name and through the blood of Jesus, to (heal me, supply my need, give me clarity of thought). I can promise you that your faith will not go unanswered. Hebrews 4:14-16 Now that we know what we have—Jesus, this great High Priest with ready access to God—let’s not let it slip through our fingers. We don’t have a priest who is out of touch with our reality. He’s been through weakness and testing, experienced it all—all but the sin. So let’s walk right up to him and get what he is so ready to give. Take the mercy accept the help. God is faithful.

The old hymn says “Great is Thy faithfulness, morning by morning new mercies I see, all I have needed your hand has provided, Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”  If your faith seems weak, Mark 9:24 Lord I believe, please help my unbelief! God will not get mad at you for admitting it; He will give you the help you need!

Growing up in a Pentecostal Church we were told that Ash Wednesday & Lent were just man made rites & not really a part of Easter, almost as bad as the Easter Bunny concept. As I got older & began to study in more depth I realized there was a lot to them. Other churches were doing this out of love for the Father & Son. Our denial actually cost us a great & precious time of fellowship with the Lord. The Jewish people use the Feast in October as a time to confess & clean one’s spiritual home. To me Ash Wednesday starts that home cleaning period for us as Christians. It’s a time to look deep inside our self & see how our life lines up with the life Jesus led before us during His visit here. It is a time to ask forgiveness not only from the Father but from those around us who we have hurt or negated. It is also a time to pledge our life an new to our walk with the Lord. And it is a real time to show our love & devotion to Jesus for His taking our place & making a way for us to be free from sin & have eternal life. This is a great week as far as I am concerned & while I may not give up things for Lent I do try & get closer to the Lord. God bless.
