Can you answer this question?

Years ago I was in a church bowling league, pity the poor team that had to have me because I had never bowled and didn’t have the first clue as to how to stand or throw the ball, if I were ever able to simply keep it out of the gutter everyone cheered! One thing I heard more than once from would-be instructors was to “carry through” with the throw, seems that was supposed to make a difference. Later on in life I listened in as someone was giving golf lessons and again I heard the encouragement to “carry through” with your swing. I believe I have heard it back when my son as getting instructions on how to bat when he was in the Little League. Actually that is good advice for anything you do isn’t it?

If you begin a project see it through to the end. I have a problem of being distracted and cleaning in great spurts of energy and while I am in the middle of that I will think of something else that needs to be done so I leave cleaning product, cloths with polish, brushes to scrub the toilet in the middle of what I am doing and go to my next project planning to come back later and finish…sometimes I really do it too! I remember a project that was left in the early stages and I won’t mention who it was but one member of my family decided to paint our basement “sunshine yellow”, at least that was the name on the can. One corner got painted and then stood in infamy to accuse the painter for years to come that the project never got finished. Therefore, anytime anyone decided to do a project after that we would all simply say “sunshine yellow” signifying that if it got started it needed to be finished.

I gave that a lot of thought this past week as I spent time reading the Gospels and following the life of Jesus. Everything He did was done to achieve a determined end, one that He knew was coming as well as the reason it had to be finished, His life had purpose. From the moment He was born until we first see Him conversing in the Temple with the elders at the age of twelve He was learning His Father’s business and, as He told Mary and Joseph when they found Him there with the elders and were going to chide Him, He was “about His Father’s business”. Every miracle He performed, every time He spoke a parable to the people or explained them to His disciples His one goal was to point to the Kingdom of Heaven and the Father.

John 14:9-10 “You’ve been with me all this time, Philip, and you still don’t understand? To see me is to see the Father. So how can you ask, ‘Where is the Father?’ Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you aren’t mere words. I don’t just make them up on my own. The Father who resides in me crafts each word into a divine act.” The dictionary says,Purpose is the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.”

If you know me I imagine you can tell me where I am going with this, my next thought was “what is my purpose on this earth?”

When I was nine-months old I was involved in a car crash that threw me from the back seat of the car, this was way before the days of infant seats, through the windshield and I landed amidst broken glass on the hood of the car. A few more inches and I would have been over the side of a bridge and landed in the bottom of a creek hundreds of feet below that bridge.

Why was I spared? Have I fulfilled the purpose in my life? Was it to live to be the caretaker of my father and having seen him go to heaven to be the lady-in-waiting until my mother makes the same journey? Was it to birth my two children, are they going to make a difference in this world and God used my body to bring them into the world? Is it to sit here and write some encouraging word to you night after night? I have done a lot of things in my life, I was singing before congregations from a very young age, was the church organist from the age of fourteen, led prayer meetings, choirs, helped in dramas, cleaned church toilets and cooked meals to be sold and yet this is where I am today…fingers on the computer and pouring out my heart to you.

I am not looking for answers for myself because I am thoroughly convinced that I actually am doing what I am supposed to be doing right now and when this job is finished there will be something else for me to do and I am not rushing it one bit, I want this “job” to last as long as it can even though I am not sure she is exactly aware of who I am sometimes.

Now let me as you the same question I asked of myself, what is your purpose? What are you doing with your life? Are you at least helping others as you pass along this way? Is there something more? Stop and think, pray, and then sit alone in silence and listen… I believe you will begin to see the Master’s plan for your life.  You weren’t called to die on a cross to save the soul of man, but you might have been called to save one person whom no one else will take the time or have enough love in their heart to help. Maybe it is all up to you…

  1. I’ve been asking the Lord this very question lately…it, and, “What do I have to show for my life?” It’s harder to point to when you don’t have children.

    1. The footprints of your life go in so may places it would be hard to say who have not affected! From the loving care with which you make jewelry, all the nature hikes, trails, water ways, friends that you have gathered all along the way, people you have helped, been an encouragement to their lives, the church for which you work and support to your loving and thoughtful comments to give me a boost on an almost daily basis… they are too numerous to tell you about! Children are children whether they come out of your physical body or out of a heart of love when you give them a helping hand or love… are children none-the-less… I am sure you have a large family of children and I know you have at least two sisters here in this part of the country! We both love you! 🙂

  2. I too think that I have a purpose in life . My life was at stake many times that I can recall, hopefully I am exactly where I suppose to be HELPING those who God has called to be at the East West Church while time is available.

    1. and Patricia, you have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help us all so may times. From the hours we used to spend praying both in person and on the phone, the many problems we have shared… yes I would say you are fulfilling your call! 🙂

  3. I received a message on FB Sat night from a Pastor friend. The message was simple “God is not through with you yet. I believe He has spoken to me that He wants you involved wit a new orphanage home. He wants you to extend your faith & give openly to bless this operation.” I know the Pastor very well & have a lot of faith & trust in her words but I must say it has set me back some what. I told her I would spend time before the Lord about it & give her an answer right away. She told me that time was of importance & God wanted me moving out in faith very quickly. This comes at a time when I was just going over our donations by way of tithes & gifts. I was thinking I needed to increase it some as we have got out from under some other debts that we have recently paid off. Must say I have been surprised. I plan to continue to pray till I feel satisfied with an answer. One never knows when God is going to use you next. Take care..
