What did I do?

IMG_1332Generally if you hear the phrase, “What did I do?” don’t you think it has a negative connotation? I guess you usually hear it after a child has been called by its full name! But today I was wondering that very thing, what did I do, but it was in the context of what did I do to deserve all the goodness and blessing that God has showered upon me? At times like that, I need to go back the devotions from the past two days on the dust of the earth and on shedding your old skin! When I think of all the promises I have made to God and broken and the ones I don’t even remember that I have broken, I wonder why He has continued to put up with me! Then I read Psalm 8 and see that the Psalmist felt exactly the same as me, he said: “What is man that Thou are mindful of Him…” Then read on and you find: “You have made him a little lower than the angels”. What I discovered in study of that is in the original translation, it literally says “You have made him a little lower than God”. Think of it, if we were lower than angels, they wouldn’t be our guardian messenger servants, given to us for our help!

1Peter 1:10-12 The prophets who told us this was coming asked a lot of questions about this gift of life God was preparing. The Messiah’s Spirit let them in on some of it—that the Messiah would experience suffering, followed by glory. They clamored to know who and when. All they were told was that they were serving you, you who by orders from heaven have now heard for yourselves—through the Holy Spirit—the Message of those prophecies fulfilled. Do you realize how fortunate you are? Angels would have given anything to be in on this! Angels come to our aid when we pray, Daniel 10:10-13 “‘Relax, Daniel,’ he continued, ‘don’t be afraid. From the moment you decided to humble yourself to receive understanding, your prayer was heard, and I set out to come to you. But I was waylaid by the angel-prince of the kingdom of Persia and was delayed for a good three weeks. But then Michael, one of the chief angel-princes, intervened to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia. And now I’m here to help you… The angel came in answer to Daniel’s prayer and fought to get there! What is man that YOU, oh Lord, are mindful of him?

Psalm 8 God, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name. Nursing infants gurgle choruses about you; toddlers shout the songs that drown out enemy talk, and silence atheist babble. I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous, your handmade sky-jewelry, Moon and stars mounted in their settings. Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way? Yet we’ve so narrowly missed being gods, bright with Eden’s dawn light. You put us in charge of your handcrafted world, repeated to us your Genesis-charge, Made us lords of sheep and cattle, even animals out in the wild, Birds flying and fish swimming, whales singing in the ocean deeps. God, brilliant Lord, your name echoes around the world.  My soul cries out in the night and all day, Oh Lord, MY Lord, how excellent is YOUR name in all the earth!

Oh Lord why are you so good to little old me? Now ask yourself the question, “What did I do?”
