After my mother had her cataracts removed, every time she looked in the mirror she would ask me what the doctors did to her face! I would tell her they didn’t do anything to her face, they just took the cataracts from her eyes so that now she was seeing herself clearly! She didn’t like that answer!
Spiritually we sometimes have the same problem, we are so blinded to our own bad attitudes and little sins that if we had our spiritual cataracts removed we would just be stunned.
Thinking about this made me remember my own cataract story! I walked into the local Wal-Mart one day and noticed a glorious cloud hanging over me. I did notice this phenomenon at other places, even sometimes at church and I attributed it to being the holy cloud, but this holy cloud was always more visible in Wall-Mart than any other place! I loved to shop there because I felt like Moses following the cloud! Then I had a mighty revelation, a big awakening!
It was time to have my eyes examined and to my amazement I found that I had cataracts! A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. I asked the doctor how big mine were and she told me that she sized them by saying they were “baby, teenager, or adult”, as it turns out mine were teenagers but they were right in my line of vision so that I was seeing everything through that cloud, and I found out that when I was in a bright light, such as in Wal-Mart, it was even more visible, so I made the necessary arrangements to have these obstacles to my vision removed. Sadly when it was over, I realized that I was a normal mortal, no heavenly cloud followed me everywhere, and on top of that I saw that there were cobwebs in all the corners of my house that I had not been able to see before now, and I guess no one else had noticed! So out came the ladder and the blue feather thing that picks them right up!
In thinking about this, I realized there are a lot of things in our life we quit seeing because things begin to cloud our spiritual vision.
Psalm 119:17 Be generous with me and I’ll live a full life; not for a minute will I take my eyes off your road. Open my eyes so I can see what you show me of your miracle-wonders.
When I was growing up, censors ruled TV Land. I remember that Milton Berle was considered “blue” and vulgar. One night as I was watching my teen crush, Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show, an actress’ dress strap kept falling off her shoulder, suddenly there was a seemingly unscheduled commercial and when the show came back and they resumed their conversation, she had a “wrap” on to cover where they had taped her strap to her shoulder with a piece of shiny black tape! Now you are daresome to surf the channels for fear of what you are going to be assaulted with! An example of that is when my grandson was about five he was changing channels while I was in the kitchen with my back turned to the screen. He got quiet and I turned to see what he was doing and nearly fainted and was shocked to see two very naked people “doing it.” I ran to turn the channel, wondering what he had comprehended!
Now think about it, what is it that you have been shocked at one of your acquaintances for doing and how you have excused yourself for doing the same thing, come on and admit it, you know it’s true!
Psalm 119:37 Divert my eyes from toys and trinkets, invigorate me on the pilgrim way. Affirm your promises to me—promises made to all who fear you.
If you try to look at yourself through someone else’s eyes you might see something a little differently which reminds me of the old song written by Gene McClelland which says, “Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the waters, put you hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea, take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently, by putting you hand in the hand of the man from Galilee” Another song that really fits is, “Open my eyes Lord I want to see Jesus“.
When you get your spiritual cataracts removed, you will suddenly see yourself with all your cobwebs and dirty corners!
Psalm 51:1-3 Generous in love—God, give grace! Huge in mercy—wipe out my bad record. Scrub away my guilt, soak out my sins in your laundry. I know how bad I’ve been; my sins are staring me down.
Psalm 19:12 Clean the slate, God, so we can start the day fresh! Keep me from stupid sins, from thinking I can take over your work; Then I can start this day sun-washed, scrubbed clean of the grime of sin.
With your spiritual cataract removed look around you, the cloud of confusion is gone, you can see clearly now!
