I saw a little boy “overhear” a comment between his parents discussing Christmas and as he learned that he was getting the snare drum he wanted he jumped and danced and laughed and swore this writer to secrecy! With tears I remember watching an old man’s face as his grandson gave him an unexpected early Christmas gift the year before he died, it was something he had really wanted and he looked like an excited child as he sat there in his red PJs, and watched as his grandson put the “thing” together. Anytime I served an ice cream cone to my mother, even after she forgot exactly who I was, she remembered she loved ice cream and I would see a happy face.
I saw a very happy face today as I talked with a man whom I had never met and he told me about the Bible study he had just attended. He didn’t know me at all so he thought he was witnessing to someone about the love of his Jesus that might not know of Him. I let him tell me all about it before I smiled broadly at him and explained that Jesus was an old friend of mine!
Happy faces are more than just the little icons that people put on their posts, it is my emotion of choice!
The dictionary says that 1.”Happy” means delighted, pleased, or glad, as over a particular thing: to be happy to see a person. 2. Characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy. The Bible has four different types of “happy“.
Job 5:17 “Happy are you when God steps in and corrects you! Mind you, don’t despise the discipline of Almighty God!” Did you ever feel happy after your parents punished you, and did you believe them when they said, “this hurts me more than it does you“? I never believed it either but having children of my own, that occasionally needed discipline, I totally got it!
Psalm 127:4-5 Children born to a young man are like arrows in a warrior’s hands. How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them! Wonder how many “arrows” that writer had? Of course my own two make me extremely happy, and proud, and the joy kept on coming in the form of two grandchildren!
Proverbs 3:13-18 You’re happy and blessed when you meet Lady Wisdom, when you make friends with Madame Insight. She’s worth far more than money in the bank; her friendship is better than a big salary. Her value exceeds all the trappings of wealth; nothing you could wish for holds a candle to her. With one hand she gives long life, with the other she confers recognition. Her manner is beautiful, her life wonderfully complete. She’s the very Tree of Life to those who embrace her. Hold her tight and be blessed! OK, wisdom, knowledge and understanding, makes sense, right? Whenever I don’t know how to pray about a situation, I always say “Lord give me wisdom, knowledge and understanding of this so I’ll know what You would have me to do!”
Proverbs 28:14 A tenderhearted person lives a happy and blessed life; a hardhearted person lives a hard life.
So here are four things, discipline, children, wisdom and being tenderhearted. Which of those things make your happiness?
Happiness is laying down to sleep at night knowing that you have done everything you could in that day to make those around you feel love, and for yourself to feel loved. For me it is in knowing that the Lord is my Shepherd and I will not lack any good thing because He will take care of me and find me the choicest pasture in which I can feed. To know that he will take care of me for His own names sake, to feed me and anoint my head with oil in front of people that don’t consider me worthy. To know that goodness and mercy are chasing me and will follow me all the days of my life, and that I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever! (Psalm 23) Happy is seeing you, in my mind’s eye, as you are reading this and hopefully getting some morsel of joy, hope, something thought provoking or encouraging. If that is true then I am happy!
I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!
