In the spirit of the season of Christmas when we should be celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ, I want to post an email that a man who had served in the United States Navy sent to me. I thought that when the election was over and done with, whoever had won, we would at last have a little peace. I don’t have to tell you that is not the way it is. This was sent to me four years ago and as you read it you see that it could have been written yesterday. In the words of an infamous person, Rodney King, “Why can’t we just all get along?”
I asked his permission to post this because these are my sentiments also.
As I began watching the Army Navy game today I actually teared up during the pregame ceremonies. Every one of those young men and women volunteered to put their lives on the line to protect you and me and our way of life. As I watched the game I was overcome by the realization that, although the players were combatants on the field, each and every one of them would die for the other. And they all have a sense of honor that is lacking in the general culture of professional sports, as evidenced by the events of the last few days concerning a murder/suicide and a drunken manslaughter by professional football players. What a contrast… In my opinion this country is personified by those young men and women of the military. They represent me… not the politicians. The politicians represent the government, not the country. The men and women of the military represent our country. Every one of them would give their life for our country. How many politicians do you know that would do that? Just my thought for the day.
The man that penned this is in the hospital suffering with cancer, he has been my friend since we were four years old and I ask that you remember him in your prayers. Having said that, let us pray for the peace that was meant to be! Merry Christmas
