I am always on a diet of some type, so I am used to being hungry, I generally don’t have a hard time with that but today I noticed that with every stressful situation, and there were many, I came back downstairs and wanted to find something good to eat, something sweet would be the plan, but since I didn’t have anything like that in the house I just had an empty feeling in my stomach, why did I want to eat? It is emotional eating and I had lots of emotion, somehow it makes you feel better, that’s why they call it comfort food! Everyone has a different idea of what “comfort” food really is. The term “comfort food” (first used, according to Webster’s Dictionary, in 1977) refers to foods consumed to achieve some level of improved emotional status, whether to relieve negative psychological affect or to increase positive. More generally, comfort food can be defined as food that brings some form or measure of comfort, a sense of well-being, or easy satisfaction. The article says that men usually choose a hearty meal such as a casserole, and women are more likely to choose snacks like chocolate and ice cream. The study shows that guilt usually follows bingeing on these little comforts, causing stress; therefore, you guessed it, needing more comfort! What do you need when you are stressed out, or very upset about something going on in your life that you feel out of control over? Sometimes having someone to hash it out with helps, someone who has “been there” who will just listen. I was listening to someone, or thought I was, and didn’t realize that I was offering a solution for everything he said, until he looked at me and said, “I didn’t need for you to find answers, I just wanted you to listen.” Yes, I felt embarrassed so I shut up and listened, as he droned on and on. So no, that is not what you need, you do need someone that can give you honest feedback, whether you listen, take their advice or not, at least you have heard advice from outside of yourself!
A warm hug, a smile, an appropriately timed “I love you”, all the above also give a lot of “comfort”. Then there is the time that you need comfort that can only come from God. There are 119 scriptural references to that very subject, comfort!
Start with one of my faves; Psalm 23:4 Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. Need a strong friend? Go to Isaiah 51:12 “I, yes I, am the one who comforts you. So why are you afraid of mere humans, who wither like the grass and disappear? Psalm 19: 16-24 Who stood up for me against the wicked? Who took my side against evil workers? If God hadn’t been there for me, I never would have made it. The minute I said, “I’m slipping, I’m falling,” your love, God, took hold and held me fast. When I was upset and beside myself, you comforted me and cheered me up. For the times that you can only speak the thoughts of your heart to God, there is prayer. That is the ultimate comfort because you know He hears, whether you get the answer you want, or not, He did hear. If I gave my children everything they asked for, not only would they be spoiled, they would expect that from everyone, and we all know that will NOT happen! But I always make sure they get everything they need. A song says: I trust in God, I know He cares for me, on mountains bleak or on the rolling sea. Though billows roll, He keeps my soul, my heavenly Father watches over me.
So save calories, instead of indulging on goodies just wrap yourself in the comfort of His love!
