When I was a young girl there was a TV show, the host was Gary Moore I think, called “I’ve Got A Secret”. There was a panel of people who listened to and questioned three people to see who really had the secret. These days it wouldn’t be very hard to find out, all you have to do is read their status on Facebook! People expose themselves in these forums and then are surprised because people know what’s going on in their lives! Someone mentioned the name of a couple to me and I said, “Oh yes, they are having marital problems,” the other person looked incredulous, as if I had suddenly gotten naked and said, “I was told not to say anything about that, how did you know?” To which I answered, “I have been reading his Facebook status, and he keeps talking about it.”
Sometimes things are better left unsaid, unless you really don’t care if everyone knows your business or unless they can actually be of help to you. Someone told me today that they had a big problem and was praying and asking God about who would be the best person to talk to about it, when they suddenly realized they were already talking to the best confidant in the whole universe, God! There are many public figures that have ruined their reputations by leaving suggestive phone messages, not realizing or forgetting that they are probably being recorded, or post inappropriate pictures to people they have no business communicating with!
Mark 4:22-24 For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.” Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more.”
When Jesus was walking with his disciples, everywhere He went people approached Him wanting to be healed, He would tell them to go and tell no one what had happened. They couldn’t keep such a wonderful secret and Jesus’ fame spread far and wide! That’s the kind of secret that was a good thing to tell! Our tongue can get us into so much trouble. James 3:2-11 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God and so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water?
Keep your tongue from causing you to sin, keep your secrets to yourself and know that “It Is No Secret What God Can Do!”
