911, Who’s listening?

I was driving east on 14th street and the traffic was kind of backed up causing me to drive more slowly than usual, so I was able to look around at other drivers. I looked at the car in front of me and realized that there was a large man in the passenger side who was up in the seat and using his fist and forearms to beat the small woman who was driving the car! I couldn’t believe my eyes it looked like he was yelling at her while he was striking her blow after blow. I don’t know how she kept the car in its lane. I began to blow my horn trying to distract him or draw some ones attention to what was going on but all to no avail. If there was ever a time for a 911 call this was certainly it!

I picked up my cell phone and punched in the numbers waiting for an operator to pick up while I had this car in my sight. I am sorry to say that the operator that answered was less than efficient! I tried to tell her what was happening, I told her that I was driving east on 14th street and was almost to where the bridge went over I-75, that is when she stopped me to ask “What city are you in?” WHAT CITY AM I IN? I JUST TOLD YOU WHERE I AM!! There is a man beating a woman to death while she I trying to drive a car, WAIT they are getting on the ramp South bound, PLEASE send a policeman to stop them!” I had already tried to give her the license plate number but somehow I didn’t get the idea she ever really understood what I was saying and coupled with the fact that I was calling from an Atlanta based cell number and I would believe that anyone who lives here knows exactly where 14th Street crosses over I-75! If this lady was an example of our 911 system operators then we are in trouble! I hope and pray that someone else saw this tragedy happening and maybe were able to get help to this poor lady, God only knows.

It made me think about how many times I have called on God with a “911” emergency and I am glad that He always knew right where I am without having to ask me to give my location!

Jeremiah 33:3  Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.

  1. Wow!

It hurts to read that. Sorry it happened at all… but also that your sense of urgency was so futile and frustrated.

In contrast… a few years ago I activated EMS when my dad’s health was failing. I spoke to a very competent 911 operator who was very helpful. And then about 15 minutes later she called me back and identified herself as a sister from church! during the EMS call, she had been all business and did not share this personal information. But after the emergency was under control, she called me back to identify herself and let me know she had been praying for us!

      1. Yeah… sorry. That was the beginning of a long story, actually. Don’t know where to stop it, honestly, but I should have said he is okay. (I was typing that last night with one finger on one hand while the 3 month old was falling asleep in the other….) Yes, Dad survived a long ordeal, but he was always impressed that God’s angel was there to answer the call.
