When I was a little girl there was a “soap opera” named “Search for Tomorrow“, and the famous line referenced in the title was from the novel and subsequent movie, “Gone With the Wind” and was the catch phrase of one Katie Scarlett O’Hara, Hamilton, Kennedy, Butler. That’s fine for a novel or a movie, but in real life if we are always searching for tomorrow or putting off things we need to take care of, or not face our problems so that we can find solutions, then we are not really living our life we are just going through the motions and hoping we can stay a step ahead of the demons that are chasing us. Joshua addressed the children of Israel and gave them hope about tomorrow, telling them 3:5 “Sanctify yourselves. Tomorrow GOD will work miracle-wonders among you.” I get up every morning looking for miracle-wonders from God. If you think about it turning a faucet handle and getting hot or cold water or talking on a telephone especially one you can carry around in your pocket would have been a miracle to my great grandparents who had to pull their water up in a bucket from a well and didn’t have a phone! My point in naming some things you might think are mundane is that we take so many things in our lives for granted. I say let us give thanks to God the Creator of our life every day as we wake and see the morning light; every time we are able to cook or eat a meal we need to remember all the people in this world who stand in lines for one simple bowl of rice which is supposed to feed them for a whole day. In Proverbs 27:1 we are cautioned not to take tomorrow for granted, “Don’t brashly announce what you’re going to do tomorrow; you don’t know the first thing about tomorrow.” How many times I have heard people make plans for their future only to have their life cut short in death, or drastically changed by a dreadful accident. We pray for angel protection every day that we are promised in Psalm 91. Matthew 6:26 “There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.” Tomorrow you could be let go from your job, that’s the negative, or you could go in to find a bonus check or a pay raise on your check, only God knows and worrying about tomorrow doesn’t change a thing! James 4:13-14 And now I have a word for you who brashly announce, “Today—at the latest, tomorrow—we’re off to such and such a city for the year. We’re going to start a business and make a lot of money.” You don’t know the first thing about tomorrow. You’re nothing but a wisp of fog, catching a brief bit of sun before disappearing. Instead, make it a habit to say, “If the Master wills it and we’re still alive, we’ll do this or that.”
I will not dread what the future may hold, we are not promised tomorrow so I will be happy for today and say “If it is God’s will, tomorrow is … another day!
