When you think about talking to God what is the first thing that comes to your mind? Is it your Christmas list of things you need? I think that we sometimes think of God as an emotionless entity that is just “out there” to send us the things we need. Not everyone, I wouldn’t dare lump everyone in the same category, but if I am guilty of that at times then I have wonder if maybe you do the same. The attitude we should approach God with is an attitude of worship! If you look in the Bible I have a perfect example, it is Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. You remember that she wanted to sit and hear Jesus teach while Martha was busy cooking. When Martha complained to Jesus about it He answered, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”
Mary wanted to be near Jesus and hear every word that came out of His mouth.
Matthew 26:6-16 When Jesus was at Bethany, a guest of Simon the Leper, a woman came up to him as he was eating dinner and anointed him with a bottle of very expensive perfume. When the disciples saw what was happening, they were furious. “That’s criminal! This could have been sold for a lot and the money handed out to the poor.”
When Jesus realized what was going on, he intervened. “Why are you giving this woman a hard time? She has just done something wonderfully significant for me. You will have the poor with you every day for the rest of your lives, but not me. When she poured this perfume on my body, what she really did was anoint me for burial. You can be sure that wherever in the whole world the Message is preached, what she has just done is going to be remembered and admired.”
Mary truly got, it! She knew by listening to Jesus that he wasn’t going to be with them forever and she was worshipping him without regards to the cost of the perfume or what people would say about her reasons for doing it! That is what I call extravagant worship!
You may not have an expensive box of perfume to give to Jesus to show respect and worship, and He doesn’t want that from you anyway, what He does want is your time, the time to talk with Him and thank Him for His goodness, mercy, and everlasting kindness.
Last night as I was going to sleep I began to think of the suffering He did as He was beaten and nailed to the cross, all for me and I realized that I would never be able to bear torture like that.
As I went to sleep there were tears on my pillow. God knows.
