You can do something you know you’re going to regret, but you do it anyway, then comes the guilt, that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach wishing you could hit the re-wind button and fix it, but knowing that is impossible, then what?
Your light goes out, maybe not completely out, yet, but dims a little.
John 1:3-5 Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!—came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out. Jesus came into the world and he was the Light.
Matthew 5:14-16 Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
There is a phenomenon in the sky that happens occasionally, it is an eclipse. That is when the moon passes between the earth and the sun completely blocking our light. Even chickens will begin to roost, thinking it is nighttime! When we let the ‘cares of this life’ come between us and the light of the Son, our light goes out! I watched the light play, reflect, and change colors in the diamonds on my hand. The light playing off those diamonds is brilliant like a small fireworks display, but when I am in the dark there is no sparkle, fireworks all gone, why? The light has gone out and they are only reflectors of light, there is no light inside of them, they cannot shine without being shined ON, therefore, the diamonds in the dark are no longer beautiful, they could be no more than simple pieces of glass.
Reflector: a body, surface, or device that reflects light, heat, sound, or the like.
If Jesus is the ‘light of the world’, then He shines on us. As Christians then, shouldn’t we act as reflectors of that light so that the light is then shined on others around us? Whenever you let anything come between you and the “Light”, yours automatically goes out, and you are no different than a chunk of carbon lying within the walls of a cave undiscovered to be the diamond that you really are.
Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
I have a Hurricane lamp, saved for those times when the electricity goes out and stays off for any length of time, but I got it out and looked at it and the glass was so smoky and dark I doubt the little flame would have given much of a light if we needed it. I took it apart and gave it a good scrubbing; it is now shining and crystal clear, ready for use.
Psalm 139:23-24 Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life.
If you have anything blocking you from the Light, get out the scrub cloth of the Holy Spirit and give yourself a good cleaning so that your reflector is clean and ready to reflect the Light of the world, Jesus Christ!
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine!
