What’s it all about…tacky sweaters and Christmas?

OK, OK I will admit that I have been watching the Hallmark channels (both of the) and all the Christmas movies. I know they have much the same plot and all the actors I love to see (there is one exception which I keep writing tweets to Hallmark about but they continue to put as the romantic lead and he would be better cast as the best friend or brother, but that’s a blog for a different day) I digress… One of the things that has come up in several of the movies is about the “tacky/ugly sweater contest”.

What’s with the “tacky sweater” thing?

The Christmas I turned fourteen my gift was a “bulky knit” red sweater and I thought it was divine. In the eighties the sweaters had giant shoulder pads in them, I was never a fan of those and would take them out, but that made the shoulders droop because of the extra material put in to hold up the shoulder pads. I felt like it made me look like a linesman for the Green Bay Packers, not my favorite look! A couple of years ago my son came in and showed me a tacky sweater he had bought to wear to a business party, with a dress shirt and a tie!

Wow, what has the world of fashion come to?

I’m thinking that on the night Jesus was born in Bethlehem the Angels probably didn’t have shoulder pads in their celestial robes in front of their wings, and also pretty certain that they weren’t wearing tacky sweaters.

Luke 2: 8-14 There were sheepherders camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.” At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

No hidden meaning or wise words here, just wanting to say that while we are having fun and enjoying the Christmas Holidays let us remember that Jesus is the Reason for the Season, and if you need a place and a reason to wear a tacky sweater you could always wear one to our church, I would love to see you there!
