Leaving to take the twins to school on these fall days, it is still dark… the crescent moon was high in the cloudless sky, traffic wasn’t too heavy, the guys were on their iPad, and I was able to think…never mind the music of Peppa Pig on one and the story of the First Sin on the other.
Stopping at red lights before hitting 285, it seemed…no, it is a fact, every person I saw was looking down at the phone in their hand…making them slow to respond to the traffic starting to move in front of them. I noticed some were gesticulating, others laughing…all preoccupied and not paying close attention to their driving and I was guilty, while not on my own phone, of being a people watcher.
I noticed again what a beautiful morning it was, the sky was getting lighter by the moment, and told the boys to look out the window at the moon. One of them said, “Let’s go jump on the moon!” I laughed and said, “It’s too far away! We could never reach it!” At that, I lost him to Peppa Pig.
I started thinking, as I was merging into the oncoming traffic…we are a very small part of our galaxy, a pinpoint compared to the size of other planets, more than billions of stars in the sky, millions of people on our own planet…all of us producing noise of one sort or another, and yet the Bible tells me that God hears us when we pray, knows the number of hairs on my head, He sees a sparrow fall from its nest and notices a deer giving birth in the forest…that just fills me with such awe and wonder and makes me feel so small and insignificant, yet important enough for the Creator, God of the whole Universe to know this girl by name…wow!
Psalm 8
Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory
in the heavens.
2 Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
3 When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?
5 You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
7 all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
8 the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.
9 Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Amen!
