Somebody Stop Me!

Photo 155“Somebody stop me!! I have been sucked into the power of a paid advertising program and yes I am going to do it! This is a virgin experience! I am ordering the POWER PRESSURE COOKER!!!! Color me excited, gullible, sucked in, guilty of all the above!”

Earlier today I posted the above status on my personal Facebook page and before I could get off the page there were thirty-three likes and nineteen comments! I was stunned! I wondered how many of them had ever been caught in that same net of advertising! It is a very good thing that I have never watched any of these Super Salesmen before or I might need to borrow money from you to pay off my credit card bills!

Those silver-tongued salesmen do have a way with words that can convince a person living in the desert that indeed they do need more sand!

If you know me personally at all, then you know that I love the study of words. I love to dig into the meaning and then check the Thesaurus for different ways to express it. I was reading in Ephesians chapter 6 verse 13 “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day. And having done all, to stand.”  Not a word we use everyday, withstand, it caught my attention. In the verse we know it means that we will have to take up a “battle post” to come against evil, but in looking up the meaning I got a little surprise.

I take allergy medicine when I need it as I do have sneezing attacks over dust or cats and worst of all I am allergic to the beautiful Spring flowers and then ragweed in the Fall! What is an allergy medicine called, anyone? It is called an antihistamine.

The Greek word for “withstand” is antihistemi. Compare antihistamine, from anti, “against,” and histemi, “to cause to stand.” The verb suggests vigorously opposing, bravely resisting, standing face-to-face, or toe-to-toe against an adversary, standing your ground. Just as an antihistamine puts a block on histamine, anthistemi tells us that with the authority and spiritual weapons granted to us we could withstand evil forces.

I can be sneezing so hard that it hurts and take one little tiny white antihistamine and in a few moments my sneezing has stopped! We have to withstand anything that comes against us so that it doesn’t just quiet down, but STOPS completely!

Ephesians 6:13 “Be prepared. You’re up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it’s all over but the shouting you’ll still be on your feet. Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, and salvation are more than words. Learn how to apply them. You’ll need them throughout your life. God’s Word is an indispensable weapon. In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.”

The neat thing about putting on God’s armor (truth, peace, faith and salvation) is that one size actually fits ALL! It isn’t like David when he was still a shepherd going out to face Goliath and Saul tried to give him his own armor, which was several sizes too big! He couldn’t even see out from under the helmet and the shield was so heavy he could hardly pick it up! This armor fits us and we use it like running to the basement when the Doppler sees a tornado; we run to God and use His Words as our protection.

We wear the armor to maintain our “battle-stance” and it isn’t just passive protection it is to be used offensively against Satan and his forces!

The Apostle’s final directive was “praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.” Prayer helps us in this battle of life and with God’s Word is our chief weapon used against Satan during our struggle! We all face struggles every single day.

Some days it feels like I don’t do anything right! Even giving my mother an ice cream cone turned out bad, how does that happen? I have found that there comes a time that if you know in your heart you are right, you have to trust God and go for it, no matter what anyone else says.

The enemy of your soul will battle you on every side, so when he does come just be happy about it, it just means you must be doing something right else he would leave you alone!

Be encouraged, whatever your particular battle is, just stand, be strong, and pray.

We have never lived in a more desperately wicked time and learning to Withstand is necessary for our very survival!

  1. I loved this! Jeff is leading a bible study and has for about a year. The first book was My One Word by Paster Mike Ashcraft. My one word is Withstand! This really summed up what I have been going through and learned a lot this year. I really would have loved to have read this last year. Everything you wrote was what I have been learning to and how to relate to Withstanding everything everyday this year. How did you know I needed to read this today! Love you my friend! I appreciate you and your encouraging words! Miss ya! 🙏😘💗🌹
