Mine is a Jealous Heart

IMG_2511This past week was Valentine’s Day, a day that love is celebrated and it was a big day at my house! I was talking on the phone at about 6 AM and something shiny out on the porch caught my attention as I looked at the window. I ended my call so I could go have a look to see what it was and when I opened the door I say the largest display of gifts I have ever seen outside of gifts under my Christmas tree! All of these gifts were arranged on a large red blanket and there was everything from a dozen roses, huge Teddy Bears and chocolate candies to bracelets, T-shirts and the list goes on and on! Unfortunately this display was not for yours truly but for my beautiful granddaughter with blonde hair and blue eyes! I said, “that boy either has too much money or too little restraint!” Kidding of course, but it shows in the flesh what new love makes a young man do!

Have you ever heard of “the green-eyed monster”? In case you have not that is how I refer to someone who is jealous. In my playlist I have Dolly Parton singing “Mine is a Jealous Heart” and upon listening to it again today I have to that admit that I do tend to have a jealous heart. Song of Solomon 8:6 Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as enduring as the grave.  Love flashes like fire, the brightest kind of flame. The KJV version says “…for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave:” It is an emotion that can cause people to do terrible things, even murder, and bring division in relationships, not just romantic but also friendships.

Is there a good jealousy? I think there is. I think that you must have a jealousy over your life, your family in order to keep that close eye on what is happening around you so you can keep it safe! I feel that sometimes when a partner shows no jealousy at all, it simply appears that they don’t really care. I am not recommending the mean-spirited jealousy that doesn’t want you to speak to anyone of the opposite sex, but just let your partner know that you care too much to let someone interfere in your relationship.

We need to guard our spiritual life as jealously as we guard our loved ones. When we let things slip in that take our attention away from serving God with our whole heart, guess what…He gets jealous of us! Proof is found in ten different places in the Bible, I will give you two: Exodus 34:14 Don’t worship any other god. God—his name is The-Jealous-One—is a jealous God. Be careful that you don’t make a covenant with the people who live in the land and take up with their sex-and-religion life, join them in meals at their altars, marry your sons to their women, women who take up with any convenient god or goddess and will get your sons to do the same thing. Deuteronomy 4:24 The Lord your God is a devouring fire; he is a jealous God.

What about these people who are trying to make our God, and our Savior, Jesus Christ one of several ways to get to “Paradise”, or Heaven? The same way that you are jealous over your partner or family, God is jealous over you! He loved us so much that He sent Jesus to be our personal savior.

1 John 3:1 What marvelous love the Father has extended to us! Just look at it–we’re called children of God! That’s who we really are, it is also why the world doesn’t recognize us or take us seriously, because it has no idea who He is or what He’s up to.

He loves us, so what do we do for Him? Well we could leave a “porch full of gifts” at the altar, but the gifts wouldn’t mean anything if you don’t love Him enough to keep His commandments. Another way to prove your love is to keep from committing spiritual adultery by following other “ways” and most important is to “love your neighbor as yourself” because God is love and if we are to be like Him, then we have to love each other, whether we want to or not! I know there are some people who are just un-likable, and un-lovable and the only way to love them is to ask God to love them through you!

Guard your family and your relationships with a Godly jealousy and most important is for you to accept the love of this wonderful and Jealous God!
