Raise your hand if you ever got an email that had Mark 8:38, “Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels,” attached to it.
This is meant to intimidate you into forwarding that email to your whole address book. I’m not saying that the message in some of those isn’t good, but somehow it always makes me cringe to see it and all it makes me want to do is to hit “delete”! I’m sorry I don’t think Jesus would appreciate anyone using superstitious blackmail as a means to pass His word.
Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
Living your life as a good example or likeness of Jesus is a good way to start living unashamed. Someone touched me as a very young woman who I will never forget she made a huge impact on me. Her name was Marie Pauls; she came to minister to our church and was the first woman preacher that I ever knew. Marie had been a “Hollywood actress” in her young years, and at the time of which I am speaking she was 80 years old and in some ways still very much the “diva” with a big dip of the “dramatic” that befit a woman of her era, I simply loved her. She wanted to do a little shopping so we went to the Mall; every sales person we encountered received a short testimony, and an offered prayer. I dare say that we didn’t leave many dry eyes in our wake that day, I was surprised at how strangers responded to her, and I guess they had never experienced a woman like Marie. We were standing on the sidewalk, in front of the Plaza Drug Store on Ponce, waiting for our ride when she began to tell me her own personal story. As the bride of a successful young doctor, they boarded a ship for their honeymoon this would have been in the 30’s. While on this cruise across the “Pond”, her husband, the doctor, fell ill and died. She boarded that ship as a bride and returned as a pregnant widow. As she told me how God sent His ministering angels to her during her time of mourning and the birth of a son who was born with a deformed left arm, tears spilled from her eyes and down her cheeks. Her Hollywood connections tried to get her to come back to their life of parties and high living, but she found the Lord on that ship and wouldn’t trade Him for any party or friend in Hollywood, or else where. After a time she met Otto, a very short, stocky man, with a fringe of curls around his ears and a shiny head, he loved his Marie and she loved him. Together they evangelized the United Stated and brought many to the Lord. Did this happen to her so she would become an evangelist? No, I think it happened and God saw in her an open heart, to which He held out a helping hand and she gratefully and willingly reached out and took hold of it.
Isaiah 54:4 Do not fear, for you will not be ashamed; Neither be disgraced, for you will not be put to shame; For you will forget the shame of your youth, And will not remember the reproach of your widowhood anymore.
God gave her a wonderful and loving husband and a second son, and she never failed to thank Him for it.
Proverbs 18:24 A man who has friends, must be friendly himself, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Jesus will be your friend and remember this, He is never ashamed of you, live in a way to make Him proud to call you friend whether you send that email…or not!
