The Devil and the Duck

Today something happened that was funny to me and made me think of this story. When people think they are keeping secrets it always gets back to the one they are trying to keep it from, so my question is this, if you don’t think what you are doing is wrong then why are you keeping it a secret? Did it ever occur to you that no one gives a care as to what you do?

When I was a little girl I never got by with anything! I always got caught, and every time it happened, my mother would say, “be sure your sin will find you out!” Numbers 32:23 does say: But if ye will not do so, (the thing God has asked you to do) behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. There’s a story, the Devil and the Duck, about a little brother and sister, Jake and Sally, were visiting their grandparents down on the farm. Young Jake was doing his best to learn how to use a slingshot! He had practiced all day, trying to hit an old tin can, and continued to miss it. He heard Grammy calling him in to supper took his slingshot and started up toward the house when he saw Grammy’s duck standing by the fence. Suddenly he just took his sling shot and flung a stone at the duck. To his shock and awe, he hit the duck square in the head and it fell over…dead! He was so sorry and didn’t know what to do so he took the duck and hid it behind the woodpile. When he looked up, there stood Sally, she had seen the whole incident and hadn’t said a word. They went in to supper and afterwards Grammy asked Sally to help her wash the dishes. Sally looked at Jake and said “Oh Grammy, Jake said HE wanted to help!” then she walked past Jake and whispered, “Remember the duck?” Next day grandpa asked Jake to go fishing with him while Grammy and Sally fixed dinner. But again Sally spoke up and said, “Oh Jake wants to help her cook, so I will go fishing with you!” and again whispered, “Remember the duck?” After about a week of this Jake went to his grandmother and came clean with the whole story of the duck. His Grammy took him in her arms and said “Jake, I knew that, I saw it all from the kitchen window. I forgave you because I LOVE you, I just wondered how long you were going to let Sally make you her slave!”

Well, dear reader, I say that the Devil has thrown accusations at us having seen ALL our sins, bad thoughts, everything we have done that we are ashamed of, and he throws it up to us often and threatens to tell on us. BUT God is watching us from His heavenly window and has already forgiven us for everything we did or imagined and is just waiting to see how long we are going to allow the Devil to make us his slave!

A song says, “The Devil’s throwing rocks and hiding his hands” John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. How long are you going to let the Devil throw things at you and make you his slave? Jesus died to SET YOU FREE! There are NO secrets between you and God, He saw everything you did and loves you anyway! Satan, accuser, will soon be bound! Revelation 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens,“It has come at last—salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth—the one who accuses them before our God day and night.

Don’t let Satan accuse you of anything, throw it right back at him! Lamentations 2:22-23 It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness!

I am so glad that I am not God nor have the power to bring justice or judgment to anyone…just a plain, ordinary old girl telling it the way it really is.

  1. Though your sins are as scarlet… Come let us reason together…

Of course, I see the sins of the church and plainly talk about them with regularity. But there is a collusion between the church and the public that should care. A pretending that something is wrong with me or that I should just be ignored.

And now my church (not that it is mine, but the place I belong to) is wrestling with homosexuality amid leadership. And I am sure God is gracious with that, but I do not believe he is in favor of it.

Meanwhile, we wrestle with whether a duck has been killed or if it was always going to be the main course anyway.

We live in a “post-modern” life that holds nothing sacred, I think. What do you say to that?

    1. I agree with you wholeheartedly X. Like my dad used to say, “We strain at a gnat and swallow a camel!” I’m about sick of it all!
