OK class (in my best teacher voice), we know that God wants us to remember that there is only one way to Him and He is the one and only God and number two He wants for us to keep ourselves free of idol worship. Now we come to number three, and this is one that I hear fractured every single day!
I like the way the Message translation puts it, “No using the name of God, your God, in curses or silly banter; God won’t put up with the irreverent use of his name.”
Now be honest, how many times a day do you exclaim the name of Jesus or God if something happens that hurts you, scares you, makes you mad and on and on and on? I have caught myself saying Jesus so many times that I stopped and had a little talk with Him. I apologized for calling on Him because I know that whenever we call His name He hears! If you have children you will identify with this, sometimes a child calls your name so many times in a short span of time that it begins to get on your last nerve! Or my dog Ruby yaps and yaps and no matter what I do for her she just keeps on. I stopped today and said, (yes I talk to my dog) Ruby, I hear you, I am coming, I have already fed you, what do you want me to do? No she doesn’t answer me any more than the nine-month old twins answer me from their jumpers or playpen. I hear them, they just don’t know it!
Know this, when you speak He hears you! Jeremiah 33:3 says: “This is God’s Message, the God who made earth, made it livable and lasting, known everywhere as God: ‘Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.’
Just make sure when you call His name you are doing it in prayer, or thanksgiving, or worship and not slang because you banged your toe into the recliner when you were vacuuming and knocked the toenail on your big toe on your right foot off!
