What is today?

Today is Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras. As I sit here wrapped up in warm blankets in my recliner there is a celebration going on in New Orleans, Louisiana. I doubt if the majority of the people on the streets eating, drinking and throwing beads even now what it is besides a night to let it all hang out. Mardi Gras is the last day before Ash Wednesday which signals the forty days of Lent and Lenten fasting leading up to Easter Sunday.

Traditionally the Lenten season meant you fasted for 40 days. There are 46 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday but since fasting wasn’t ever done on Sunday that left 40 days. It was a fast from meat and any product from an animal, milk, cheese, fat. The 40 days reflects Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness before His public ministry began, Moses’ 40 days on Mt. Sinai before he received the Ten Commandments and Noah’s 40 days on the Ark.

Enough facts?

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, I’m getting ready to celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus on Resurrection Sunday!
